we are slugs
I watched for you around every familiar corner and every time my morning eyes gazed north:
the one my heart likes to dial with slippery fingers I don't recognize
as my own. And when love and forgiveness filtered through
to the border towns of my navigation, so did you,
finally, walking towards me. And I realised she was right:
we are slugs. Sliding into each other
across a one mile beach,
a town littered with memories,
stinking carcasses and treasures buried
in the full moon sand. Sliding into each other
like breathless roller coaster carts
married to a magnetic track,
up and down but always
back again. Sliding into each other
like a spacesuit to a gasping astronaut
lost and found here
in this alien dimension. Sliding into each other,
across a lifetime devastated by betrayal. Sliding into each other, like we belong.
Like it hasn't been a year, the hardest year.
Like it wasn't all our fault.
